In the realms, there are two primary monetary units; the silver piece and the gold piece, also know as the royal piece. Value is determined by weight - coin from some foreign kingdoms may be worth more than others, based on the amount and purity of the metal. Within the kingdom of Kormyre, the gold piece is the standard measure of wealth, with silver being used as change - One gold piece is the equivilant of ten silver pieces.
Larger coins denoting 5 and 10 smaller coins of the same metal are minted in the kingdom (A ten silver piece is the same value as a one gold coin).
A drink of ale and some entertainment or grub may cost you silver piece or two, at a local tavern. Long term accommodations or a small weapon may cost you a hand full of silver to a gold piece or two. A well made long-sword or a suite of battle-worthy armor may cost you several gold pieces. To have an item enchanted by a mage of high renown may cost in excess of 50 gold.
