There are three types of Ogres in the world of Arawyn, though only one is a playable race for characters - this being the warrior Ogres of Gaaldron. The other types consist of Ogre slaves that are bred to mine Goblinoid resources and the wild variety known only as “Ogres of Yore” who are extremely rare and thought to be the harbingers of destruction. Their very existence is doubted by many.

Ogres are huge, massively built creatures with large fangs and yellow skin. They are among the largest and most dimwitted of the common races. They wandered the northern wastes long ago, but have become exploited by Gaaldron. Most Ogres are raised and trained to be mining slaves under the empire. But there are the lucky few that are trained as warriors for the imperial army. These great brutes do battle like few others. Their ferocity in battle is legendary, and their size and strength make them all the more formidable. These few Ogres were selectively bred by Goblin alchemists to be truly outstanding war machines. In days long past these Ogres were strengthened mentally by experiments, but the prototypes lacked the great hulking physical strength of their slave brothers. Admitting their mistakes, the alchemists went back to work and developed a stronger, smarter Ogre.

Trained perfectly in the arts of war, these first warrior Ogres were seen by the Hobgoblins as a chance to produce a superior army. A large force of them was sent - under the leadership of elite Orcs - west to lay siege to the cities of the High Elves. The Hobgoblins were so confident in the might of their Ogre army that they were already planning celebrations to welcome the return of their victorious armies before the first blow was struck by either side. A month later a few surviving Orcs returned, the entire Ogre regiment having been decimated. When asked about their horrid failure, the Orcs informed their leaders that the Elven magics were too powerful and had far greater effects on the Ogres than the Orcs. Enraged, the Hobgoblin High Council ordered the Goblin alchemists be held responsible, and demanded that this defect be corrected. When the aide sent to find them returned, he held a grim account. The alchemists, working on a new strength serum, had accidentally blown themselves to pieces in an errant experiment. Realizing there was no solution to their problem, the Hobgoblins accepted the Ogres as they were.

No longer bred as an army unto themselves, the Ogre warriors still make for fine rank and file soldiers, striking fear into most opponents. Ogre warriors live somewhat normal lives in the empire and frequently find their way south, pursuing large beasts in order to test their strength and fighting prowess. Ogres are proud warriors. They feel unmatched in combat, fighting until knee deep in bodies and gore, loving every minute. If not for a goblin’s mistake, they may have ruled the world once.

Ogres seldom speak, but when they do speak, they mostly speak of recent skirmishes or of past battles. Ogres are raised to be warriors and they live this single-minded lifestyle with ease. They are slow to anger over petty grievances, but will hack down those that disrespect them. Unlike most of their fellow goblinoid races, they have a natural sense of honor about battle. Ogres believe in fair combat and those who fight dirty may find an Ogre’s wrath rained down upon them. They are generally considered decent, large folk who know the art of war and little else. Mages often avoid them due to the Ogres’ hatred of magic.

Ogres mature to adulthood in their early teenage years and have a life span of approximately thirty years.

  1. Ogres despise arcane magic and those who practice it and regard them with deep suspicion; the greater the magical power, the greater the suspicion.
  2. Ogres must fight fairly, and will not take advantage of an unarmed or helpless opponent, unless the Ogre’s own prowess was the direct cause – at that point, the opponent is getting what she has earned.

Costuming and Makeup

Ogres favor practical clothes and armor for battle. Their great size and girth would limit their options at fashion anyway. You must wear prosthetic fangs and yellow makeup covering all exposed skin when playing an Ogre. Some Ogres grow horns in the center of their foreheads, but not all.
