Dark Dwarves - or Deep Dwarves as they are commonly known to their Dwarvish cousins - are Dwarves who live deep under the earth. Their mines run deeper and richer than any other race. As cousins to the Dwarves, Dark Dwarves still remember their ancient rivalry with the Elves and carry on this war with the Dark Elves. Dark Dwarf communities are constantly at war with the evil Dark Elves and a bitter hatred exists between the two races.

These Dwarves are master craftsmen with arcane and enigmatic materials but few of them toil with the weaker metals common on the surface. Those that do dabble in lesser metals sell and trade their wares between the various subterranean goblinoid races. This trade relationship has caused many surface races to be suspicious and even hostile towards the reclusive Dark Dwarves. This prejudice is also strengthened by the fact that Dark Dwarves banish rather than execute their criminals in hopes that the harsh conditions in the underground will deal with their problems for them. Those few criminals who do survive and make it to the surface live out the rest of their lives giving their race a bad name.

Relations between the Dark Dwarves and their surface cousins are very volatile. This shared hatred of one another stems back to the days when civil war ravaged the Dwarven kingdom. After their defeat, the Dark Dwarves were forced to retreat into Hobgoblin territory where they forged an alliance with the hobgoblin empire of Gaaldron for trade and the promise of assistance in defeating the Dwarves some day.

Dark Dwarves are even more serious than Dwarves. Having lived most of their lives in the harsh underground, they tend to have a gloomier outlook on life. A Dark Dwarf will trade with just about anyone for profit. When they are not mining rich ores and gems, Dark Dwarves are unmotivated and often lazy – quite in contrast to their Dwarvish cousins. They are unkempt and unorganized, and sometimes it is a wonder how they can perform their trades so successfully.
