Notice Regarding Fantasy Races/Racism

In the past, we wrote some of our game’s races with an intention of bigotry or fantasy racism around them.  In particular, Dark Elves, Nyads, and what we now call Argenti.  We did away with those points as our knowledge and wisdom base on what is and is not appropriate grew, and in the case of Dark Elves, fully removing and rewriting the past to get away from it.  This was not fully done in the case of Argenti, and it is our error for not doing so sooner. While many players continue to draw analogies to real-world culture for Argenti inspiration, there are some facets of how that translates to their portrayal in-game that we should have put to rest in the past.

The topic of monthly questioning of Argenti, Dark Elves, and Nyads from many years ago is being formally removed from our game’s continuity, in that we are hard-removing that from ever having happened.  However, the most prevalent concern we would like to address right now is the Argenti.

While we have taken steps to move away from real-world correlations and depictions, we've come to recognize that some of those portrayals have continued to come up in Argenti characters. Our earlier, lighter approach to addressing this was not sufficient, and we are taking clearer steps to prevent this.

In Romani culture, "gadjo" (masculine) or "gadji" (feminine) refers to someone who is not Romani, or who does not adhere to Romani culture, even if they are of Romani ethnicity. This is a word in real-life Romani culture, so this term should not be used in in-game settings. You should consider that there are other words in other P.O.C cultures that aren't okay to use, even if you think they are.

We intend to abandon the real-world correlation of xenophobia and racism that still seems associated with the Argenti culture in the same way that any real-world correlations with Goblin portrayal and dark elf portrayal were held in fantasy settings.  In regard to this, we know and support the camaraderie that exists among the characters of the culture, but we are plainly requesting a shift.  In recent years, we have seen a pattern occur when an Argenti character is wronged by another PC, they claim it's from a place of racism because they are Argenti. We will not accept this any longer, and want to avoid defaulting to accusations of in-game racism as a reason for conflicts.

The Agenti culture lore will be updated further to help with this course correction.  Please do not wait for these updates before abandoning the practices and roleplay we have asked for here.
